Awakau Kiwi
Location
The 91 ha Awakau Kiwi Reserve is in the Western King Country just off SH3 about 11 km east of Awakino. The regenerating forest comprises a steep gully with ridges either side. It is adjacent to the Arorangi Scenic Reserve.
History
The block was purchased in 1997. The previous owners wished to sell it as it was unsuitable for pines.
Vegetation
No flora survey has been done. Semi-coastal lowland type forest dominates.
Wildlife
No fauna survey has been done yet. Birds present include kiwi, kereru, bellbird, whitehead, tui, grey warbler, pied tit and fantail.
Special Values
The steepness of the land means its protection is very important for preserving water quality in the Kuriwera Stream, a tributary of the Awakino River. Its forest cover is in marked contrast to the denuded Western banks of the Awakino gorge and the increasing number of pine plantations on steep slopes.
Management
Goats, possums and other animal pests are present. There are a few small infestations of pampas.
No hunting without the express permission of the Native Forest Restoration Trust
How to Get There
Traveling south west on SH 3 fron Te Kuiti to Awakino, turn off to the left near the end of the Awakino Gorge (about 11 km from Awakino). The reserve is about 0.5 km from the junction on the left hand side, before the gas pipeline. There is no easy access point. Entry is at your own risk.
