Purple Peak Curry Reserve Opening

In glorious sunshine the 192ha Purple Peak Curry Reserve officially opened over the weekend, with over 120 people turning up to celebrate the launch and participate in guided walks.
There were speeches and nibbles and opportunities to catch up with old friends, and strengthen new friendships. Left to right above are Councillor Andrew Turner, Graeme and Maryn Curry and Hinewai Reserve Manager and renowned botanist Hugh Wilson.
The star of the show was the reserve itself, and quite rightly so. What Hugh Wilson and the Hinewai team have achieved in such a short space of time is truly phenomenal.
The new reserve, which includes a mix of remnant old growth and regenerating forest with wonderful views over Akaroa, will be managed by the Maurice White Native Forest Trust (Hinewai).
It’s been a real team effort from the purchase, made possible through a three-way funding partnership between the Native Forest Restoration Trust, Christchurch City Council and the Rod Donald Banks Peninsula Trust through to ongoing management. We are very grateful to the Hinewai team and the Rod Donald Trust in particular for their ongoing support, and to our supporters and everyone who turned up over the weekend to get the reserve off to the best possible start!
